How can Netflix ensure every user's viewing experience is aligned with their individual tastes?

Following user interviews that highlighted frustrations with discovery and control, I leveraged personas and a cross-platform audit of personalization practices to design data-driven UX improvements for Netflix's onboarding and recommendation systems.

Goal

  1. Develop an improved onboarding process that effectively gathers initial user preferences for personalization

  2. Provide users with customizable content filtering and personalization options

  3. Develop customizable display options, including text and poster scaling, for improved accessibility and user control

Research

Because streaming personalization often relies on algorithms that start with no data, I explored how competitions approached personalization.

Process

To address content overload, I designed three core user flows and translated them into low-fidelity wireframes. I then validated these designs through a usability study with eight participants, using their feedback on personalization and pain points to iterate and finalize the high-fidelity mockups.

Final

New Profile Onboarding

Onboarding now includes content preference selection, enabling the algorithm to learn user interests and provide relevant content right away.

Content Selection

The feed is now adjustable, allowing users to control displayed content.

Content Scaling

This demonstrates the dynamic text sizing and poster resizing.
